When drinking has taken over someone you love, a structured alcohol intervention gives your New York family one clear, calm plan instead of another argument.
An alcohol intervention is a planned conversation, led by a professional interventionist, in which a family asks someone who drinks too much to accept treatment that day. We travel to families throughout New York, from New York City, Manhattan and Brooklyn to smaller towns, with treatment and sober transport arranged in advance. Not sure it is time? Read the signs a loved one needs an intervention.
Court-ordered addiction treatment. No addiction-specific process a family can start.
Drinking and the law. New York courts must order an ignition interlock as a condition of probation or conditional discharge for a DWI conviction, for at least 12 months, which can end after six months with proof of installation (source).
State agency. New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS).
State treatment line. NYS HOPEline: 1-877-846-7369 (1-877-8-HOPENY), or text 467369.
Emergency. Call 911 if a loved one is in immediate danger. Call or text 988 for an emotional crisis.
Stopping heavy daily drinking suddenly can cause seizures or delirium tremens, so every plan includes medically managed withdrawal. If your loved one has a seizure, hallucinations or severe confusion while stopping, call 911.
Our treatment navigation takes no payment from treatment centers, in New York or out of state.
Drinking is often one part of a wider picture. New York recorded 4,449 drug overdose deaths in 2024, an age-adjusted rate of 21.3 per 100,000, according to the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics (source).
Not directly. New York has no substance use commitment law that a family can start on its own. A planned, professionally led intervention is the most reliable route to treatment.
Families cannot petition a court for involuntary substance use treatment. Police or county designees may bring an incapacitated person for emergency care, held no more than 72 hours without consent (Mental Hygiene Law 22.09). (source) Confirm the current rules with a New York attorney before relying on them.
